Opening Reception: Sat. Oct. 27, 2018, 2pm-6pm
Showing: Oct. 27 through Dec. 2, 2018, M-F, 11am-4pm and by appointment
The concept of new growth is often coupled with putting down roots and creating a foundation from which to build upon. It is the reason we gather with others and celebrate that which nourishes, sustains and supports our livelihood. This foundation and means of nourishment are akin to food and community.
For the installation of NEW GROWTH, we asked artists to explore this concept of food and art and share how their work might be of sustenance to the community. In Diane Tate DallasKidd’s Nest Series, she draws upon common objects and found artifacts that maintain life in San Francisco neighborhoods. Deborah Lawrence Schafer’s botanical paintings celebrate the bounty of nature and explore the tension between the natural and developed worlds. Jane Kim paints a larger-than-life mural to inspire people to love and protect the natural world around them, while Sam Schumacher challenges the brokenness of modern day manufacturing and consumption by creating beautiful functional glassware with intention.
Plant Dye Installation + Demo with Sasha Duerr (Opening Reception)
Through a live demonstration and installation, textile artist and author Sasha Duerr will curate a vibrant seasonal plant dye palette using an abundance of local ingredients. Sasha will highlight bi-products of culinary plants, an array of easily foraged flora, and even urban sources of color that can be found from weeds and waste.
