Palette Gallery Presents FOOD + ART

Palette opened its doors with the first public showing of the work of Peter J. Hemsley earlier this spring with great review. A chef by trade and overall artist by passion, Hemsley works from sketches, historical record, memories, taste, smell and curiosity to render his creations in the art studio and in the kitchen. His work, ever grounded in the culinary world, displays the connection between food art. The pieces on view in FOOD + ARTshow the steps of Hemsley’s creative process. From his personal recipe sketches, to sculpture, to tongue in cheek photographic interpretation, Hemsley draws the audience deep into the world of food and art. 

While researching the historical significance of an ingredient or age-old recipe, Hemsley creates tactile artworks to further his creative process and inspire new versions of timeless dishes. 

FOOD + ART is the first installment of the story of Peter J. Hemsley and the birth of Palette. Palette is to be a fine-dining restaurant, working artist studio and art gallery with the overall goal of exploring and expanding our views of the correlation between, art, food and community. Currently under development in the Western SoMa district of San Francisco, Palette aspires to bring the community together, both on a local and national level.

Peter J Hemsley was born in Philadelphia, PA. In 2008 he graduated top of his class from the world famous Le Cordon Bleu Academy in Paris. Back to the United States to practice his craft in America’s great food cities. In 2011 he relocated to France to enhance his technique and learn from the industry’s most coveted chefs. While abroad Hemsley took to drawing and paintings to further develop his recipes. Under the instruction of Alain Passard, Hemsley was reinvigorated to the fact that food and art are forever intertwined. Upon his return to the United States Hemsley began to develop the business plan of Palette, a space where diners and art officianattos find a commonality.
